Job Title: Special Education Instructor

Location: Delta, CO

Reports to: Executive Director  

Purpose:  Responsible for teaching children with disabilities, including cognitive, emotional or physical disabilities within a classroom, virtual and in home learning model.

Pay Scale: To Be Determined by Delta County School District Special Services Director per district salary schedule

Hours/Week: Part Time

Contract Days/Year: 197; 15 days paid not worked


Education/Certification: Bachelor’s Degree Required 

*CDE license as special education generalist required; Additional licensure and/or endorsements preferred

Must have a valid driver’s license and be able to pass a background check to work in a school.

Special Knowledge/Skills: The right candidate should be highly knowledgeable regarding assessment and data, special education laws and practices, in home learning  and state approved curriculums, Colorado MTSS, as well as, instructing and coaching learners and their parents.

Experience: A minimum of two years’ experience in learner instruction with preference given to candidates who have experience in a classroom, virtual and in  home learning  model.

General Description of Duties: 

This position will provide individualized evaluation and instruction for learners with Individual Education Plans (IEPs), as well as, provide both direct instruction and consultation to learners with Individual Education Plans (IEPs).They will monitor the learners’ progress in academic subjects and provide instruction in compensatory skills as needed in the areas the learners may have difficulty with as a result of their disabilities. This position will also attend IEP meetings and required staff meetings. 



  1. Coaching skills for parents and learners specific to special education needs
  2. Knowledgeable about Special Education  laws and practices
  3. Data analysis and application for assessment progress monitoring and decision making


  1. Experience creating, writing, reviewing, and implementing Individual Education Plans (IEPs) 
  2. Knowledgeable about homeschool friendly and state approved curriculums
  3. Knowledgeable regarding Colorado MTSS

Major Responsibilities and Duties: 

  1. Maintain accurate and complete learner records, and prepare reports on children and activities, as required by laws, district policies, and administrative regulations.
  2. Teach socially acceptable behavior, employing techniques such as behavior modification and positive reinforcement.
  3. Prepare materials and classrooms for class activities.
  4. Establish and enforce rules for behavior and policies and procedures to maintain order among learners.
  5. Confer with parents, administrators, specialists, and general education staff  to develop individual educational plans designed to promote learners’ educational, physical, and social development.
  6. Employ special educational strategies and techniques during instruction to improve the development of sensory- and perceptual-motor skills, language, cognition, and memory.
  7. Teach personal development skills such as goal setting, independence, and self-advocacy.
  8. Develop and implement strategies to meet the needs of learners with a variety of disabilities.
  9. Modify the general education curriculum for  learners with IEPs based upon a variety of instructional techniques and technologies.
  10. Meet with other professionals to discuss individual learners’ needs and progress.
  11. Confer with parents, other teachers, counselors, and administrators in order to resolve learners’ behavioral and academic problems.
  12. Coordinate the content of general education courses within Individual Learning Plans with appropriate accommodations and services.
  13. Observe and evaluate learners’ performance, behavior, social development, and physical health.
  14. Prepare, administer, and grade tests and assignments to evaluate learners’ progress.
  15. Administer standardized ability and achievement tests, and interpret results to determine learners’ strengths and areas of need.

Carry out other organizational requirements as necessary including, but not limited to:

  1. Assist with proctoring Learner assessments as assigned
  2. Communicate effectively with the staff members, learners, parents, administrators, and other contact persons 
  3. Participate in employee evaluation and professional development opportunities
  4. Attend meetings, trainings, committees as required
  5. Meet organizational deadlines and communication protocols 
  6. Accomplish organizational goals by carrying out other duties relevant to position as assigned by the supervisor
  7. Majority of time will be spent on-site


 Working Conditions:

  • This position works in a school environment.
  • Long periods of sitting, standing, talking on the telephone, and typing may be required.    
  • It is common for this position to have a fluctuated schedule with increased periods of stress.
  • May be required to work evening hours and weekends for special program events.
